Homelessness Report 2014
Cowichan Region Homelessness Report - This reports provides the results of the recent Homeless Count that was conducted in February 2014 throughout the Cowichan Region. The Count included a “core count” of those people who were absolutely homeless at the time of the count (staying in emergency shelters or sleeping rough) and it also includes the results of our survey of people who are relatively homeless (primarily people who may be ‘couch surfing’) as well as people who are precariously housed (paying rent but living in structures that may not have been originally built as housing or that are run-down and do not provide safe, well-maintained housing for the residents). The Count revealed that homelessness shows up in many ways and that there are people who are homeless throughout the region. Beyond the actual count numbers and the demographic statistics, we are provided a view into the many ways people are trying to manage on very low incomes, relying on food banks and other services and the strong need for more affordable housing throughout the region.
